Uyghur Resistance— Book Launch and Exhibition
6 September 2025 — 28 September 2025
Sam Biddle, Anonymous, Uyghur Resistance.
After more than four years of work, supported by 825 donors around the world, Hillvale is proud to be hosting the official launch of Uyghur Resistance in Naarm (Melbourne).
In the face of an ongoing genocide perpetrated by one of the most powerful regimes on earth, Uyghur Resistance is a testament to the diverse and often unexpected ways in which a diaspora in exile practises resistance.
This isn’t a book about what is happening to us, it is about the Uyghur voices, across continents and generations, raised in staunch defiance.
Uyghurness has become a blank canvas on which others freely project their own perspectives and anxieties. As a people, we are often sidelined in discourses about our own experiences and destiny — our complexities simplified, our identities flattened, our voices suppressed. Over decades, our community has become resigned to a world that is not only complicit in our suffering, but one that simultaneously seems to take no interest in who we are.
Uyghur Resistance, as the first project of its kind, disrupts this trend.
In the face of an ongoing genocide perpetrated by one of the most powerful regimes on earth, Uyghur Resistance invites you to bear witness to the diverse and often unexpected ways in which a diaspora in exile practises resistance.
These are the stories the Chinese Communist Party doesn’t want you to read, because to engage with our stories is to humanise our experience and to come face to face with the cost of speaking up against genocide. Our project is a testament to the truth that, no matter how hard they try, we as a people won’t ever bend to the will of the oppressor.
